How to make furniture look distressed

One of Chat Me More's viewers asked how to distress furniture.
I am happy to oblige. I have at numerous times refinished furniture.

First you want to remove the whatever coating is on the table with a chemical or sand paper
Next rough up the surface with any hard object hammer, scrapper, etc.
Add a crackle glaze
Then add a clear top coat of your choice they come in matt, glossy, etc.

When purchasing the products explain to the sales person what you are trying to achieve and they will lead you to the right products.

  1. you can also mix elmers white glue in the paint, when it dries it will give the cracked look you are looking for and will save you money on the expensive prepared paints
